Bitcoin Decouples from Tech Stocks, Strengthens Tie to Gold
The correlation between Bitcoin and technology stocks has weakened over the past few months, while its link to gold has strengthened. According to Glassnode, the 90-day correlation coefficient of Bitcoin with the Nasdaq 100 index fell from 0.57 in March to 0.22 as of September 7. In contrast, the 90-day correlation between Bitcoin and gold rose from 0.21 to 0.57 over the same period.
Bitcoin's increasing decoupling from tech stocks and its growing alignment with gold suggests a shift in its underlying drivers. The Nasdaq 100 index is a benchmark of technology stocks, which have historically been closely tied to Bitcoin's price movements. However, this correlation has weakened in recent months, indicating that other factors may be influencing the cryptocurrency's behavior.
The strengthening link between Bitcoin and gold is a notable trend. Gold is often seen as a safe-haven asset and a store of value, which are characteristics that some investors associate with Bitcoin. The rising correlation suggests that investors may be viewing Bitcoin as a substitute for gold or as a way to hedge against market volatility.
