Bitcoin Defies Bear Market Expectations with Record August Gains
Bitcoin closed August 2026 as its first-ever green month during a bear market. The cryptocurrency rose nearly 25% in value, making it the first time since records began that Bitcoin has finished August in the black when prices were falling overall.
The milestone is significant because it breaks a pattern that has accompanied Bitcoin's previous bear-market phases. In contrast to this year's performance, past post-peak years saw August finish red, with losses ranging from 1% to 10% in each case. The exception was 2017, when Bitcoin surged by over 65%, but even then the overall market was still recovering.
Bitcoin started August at around $60,000 and reached a high of over $81,000 before settling at about $78,600, according to CoinGlass data. Despite the strong monthly close, prices remain down nearly 29% for the year and more than 38% below their October 2025 all-time high.
Looking ahead, the third quarter is shaping up nicely, with a gain of nearly 33% so far. However, this would need to be significantly surpassed in September for Q3 2026 to match the same period in 2017 when Bitcoin's value rose by over 80%.
