Bitcoin Defies Historical Trend with Strongest August Since 2017
Bitcoin has just had its best August performance since 2017, defying its historical trend of being one of the worst months for the cryptocurrency. According to data from CoinGlass, between 2013 and 2025, Bitcoin has closed August higher only four times out of thirteen, with a median return of -6.99% and an average return of just 2.89%. The strong performance in August 2026 is largely due to a combination of macroeconomic liquidity injections, political support, and short squeezes.
The U.S. Treasury's decision to double its long-dated bond buybacks has spurred hopes for increased liquidity, while the inflow of $1.92 billion into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs last week is also seen as a positive factor. Additionally, more than $211 million worth of Bitcoin shorts have been wiped out in the last 24 hours, contributing to the cryptocurrency's surge.
History suggests that after a strong August performance, Bitcoin tends to end December well above its August closing price. If this trend holds true, it could be an encouraging sign for investors. However, it is essential to remember that past performance does not guarantee future results, and market conditions can change rapidly.
