Bitcoin Defies History as August Rally Sets Stage for Potential September Surge
Bitcoin's August rally has investors rethinking its September fortunes as the cryptocurrency defies historical trends. For thirteen years, August had been a weak month for Bitcoin, with a negative median return of -6.99%. However, this year's performance is an outlier, with BTC climbing by over 25% so far in August.
This significant price increase has led to a short liquidation cascade, with over $800 million squeezed on August 19th alone. As a result, speculators' attention has shifted to BTC's potential end-of-month target and the outlook for September.
Traditionally, September has been the most bearish month for Bitcoin, with an average ROI of -3%. However, BTC has closed the month positively in each of the past three cycles. Meanwhile, short-term holders have begun to take profits on prices nearing $80,000, but this trend seems to be tapering off.
Interestingly, previously bearish on-chain indicators are now turning bullish, signaling a potential larger Bitcoin rally in September. The inflow of buying interest from U.S. investors appears to be increasing, with the Bitcoin's Coinbase Premium Index turning positive for the first time in over three months.
