Bitcoin Defies Rising Bond Yields as Yen Carry Trade Unwinds
The yen carry trade has been unwinding for months, but Bitcoin (BTC) is surprisingly resilient. One factor contributing to BTC's growth is its disconnection from Japanese bond yields, which have risen significantly in recent months. The two-year bond yield has surged to 1.86%, the highest level in a decade, while the 10-year and 30-year yields have also increased.
The rising bond yields would normally be expected to negatively impact BTC, but so far, it has shown only temporary correlation. In fact, the leading cryptocurrency has gone through bull markets even as the Bank of Japan became more hawkish. The recent BTC rally in August added over 22% to its price, despite the ongoing increases in Japanese bond yields.
However, traders are still cautious and liquidity conditions remain a major headwind factor on a longer time frame. The next trigger for BTC may be the upcoming Bank of Japan meeting on September 17-18, which could lead to further yield changes and yen interventions that affect BTC. The US Fed will also issue statements on its monetary policy two days before the Bank of Japan meeting.
