Bitcoin Defies US-Iran Tensions as Crypto Projects Ramp Up Token Buybacks
Bitcoin (BTC) held its ground above $78,000 on Monday despite increased tensions between the US and Iran, which sent crude prices surging and pushed equity markets into negative territory.
The largest digital asset traded near $78,623, down less than 1% over 24 hours, after dipping to an intraday low around $77,162. This stability stands out against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty and monetary policy headwinds.
Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, noted that Bitcoin's composure in the face of simultaneous risks is more telling than its August gain itself. He pointed to derivatives data suggesting traders are repositioning rather than committing fresh capital, with 24-hour volume more than doubling to $183 billion while open interest stayed roughly flat.
Crypto projects have also been buying back their own tokens in record numbers, with a total of $638 million spent so far in 2026. Hyperliquid and Pump.fun accounted for nearly 90% of this total, with Hyperliquid responsible for around $370 million in token repurchases and Pump.fun contributing nearly $200 million.
