Bitcoin Depot Files for Bankruptcy Amid Regulatory Hurdles, Spot Bitcoin ETFs Thrive
Bitcoin Depot, one of the largest U.S. crypto ATM operators, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday, shutting down its network of over 9,000 kiosks. The company's business model has been severely impacted by steep losses, lawsuits, and tightening compliance rules.
The Iowa and Massachusetts attorneys general have sued Bitcoin Depot for more than $30 million in fraud losses tied to its machines. The company's CEO, Alex Holmes, stated that the regulatory environment has shifted significantly, making it difficult for operators to comply with new obligations and limits.
Contrary to this development, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen a surge in assets, reaching $104 billion. BlackRock's IBIT holds nearly 2,000 times Bitcoin Depot's market value.
