Bitcoin Derivative Unwind Triggers Forced Liquidations as Range Breakout Looms
The Bitcoin market is experiencing a sharp unwind in derivative positions, signaling that the long-anticipated range breakout may finally be underway.
Leveraged bulls are getting squeezed as a decline in Binance open interest and price points to forced liquidations rather than organic profit-taking.
BorisD, an analyst at CryptoQuant, described the current dynamic as a 'cleanout' of excessive leverage. He noted that the correlation between Bitcoin's price and Binance open interest reached 0.25 on Thursday, indicating that long positions are being stopped out en masse.
The unwind follows a period of unusual divergence, where Binance open interest peaked at $8.15 billion on Wednesday before declining. The metric had been steadily climbing even as spot prices stagnated.
