Bitcoin Derivatives Gap Widens, Threatening Catastrophic Shakeout
The Bitcoin derivatives gap between CME and Coinbase is widening, threatening a violent position shakeout. According to CryptoRank, leveraged funds held a net short of 41,252 BTC-equivalent across CME Bitcoin futures on August 25.
In contrast, the same category was only net long by 151 BTC in Coinbase's nano Bitcoin perpetual-style contract.
The disparity is striking: CME had 118,267 BTC-equivalent of open interest across its two products, compared to just 2,322 BTC on Coinbase. This means that CME's leveraged-fund net short was roughly 272 times the magnitude of Coinbase's net long.
The mismatch raises questions about whether CME shorts are uncovered directional positions or basis trades, which could be offset by spot Bitcoin or ETF exposure. The CFTC snapshot cannot distinguish between these possibilities without more information.
