Bitcoin Developer Admits Security Fears Held Him Back
René Pickhardt, a well-known German Bitcoin developer and Lightning Network researcher, recently admitted to being intimidated by self-custody security risks. This concern prevented him from accumulating more BTC, despite believing in its long-term potential.
In a post on X, Pickhardt explained that he was 'too ashamed' to admit the real reason for his limited Bitcoin holdings until now. He stated that even perfectly generated private keys are not immune to storage risks, software flaws, or future tech advances.
His confession comes after a recent high-profile security incident involving multiple generations of the Coldcard hardware wallet. Researchers found that attackers exploited a flaw in the random-number generator used to create wallet seed phrases, making it possible for them to regenerate wallet keys and drain funds.
The vulnerability was traced back to the software's reliance on predictable values, including device serial numbers, to generate entropy. This allowed attackers to predict wallet seed phrases under certain conditions, resulting in over 1,755 BTC (more than $100 million) being stolen.
