Bitcoin Developers Clash Over BIP-110 Proposal to Limit Arbitrary Data
A contentious proposal is underway in the Bitcoin community, known as BIP-110. This temporary softfork aims to limit arbitrary data embedded in transactions for one year, sparking heated debate among developers.
The proposal, introduced by pseudonymous developer Dathon Ohm with technical advice from Luke Dashjr, would restrict new scriptPubKeys to 34 bytes and OP_RETURN outputs to 83 bytes. It would also cap Taproot control blocks and disable certain opcodes.
Supporters argue that BIP-110 is necessary to prevent blockchain spam and protect node resources. They claim that current policy filters are insufficient, allowing miners to include transactions directly.
Critics, however, see the proposal as censorship and a threat to Bitcoin's neutrality. They argue that developers should not judge the purpose of valid transactions, even if they consume scarce block space.
