At Stanford University, Coinbase recently hosted a Post-Quantum Bitcoin Workshop in collaboration with researchers from Stanford and Localhost Research. The closed-door working session brought together key players from the Bitcoin ecosystem to address the pressing issue of post-quantum security for the popular cryptocurrency.

The workshop focused on evaluating the readiness of Bitcoin for a post-quantum future, which is crucial given the rapid advancements in quantum computing. Participants discussed various signature schemes and their tradeoffs, including lessons learned from Ethereum's post-quantum planning. They also explored operational requirements for institutional custodians and ways to introduce post-quantum protections to Bitcoin.

The group emphasized that preparation matters more than predicting a date, as the exact timing of quantum computing advancements is uncertain. Despite this uncertainty, participants agreed on the importance of having a well-tested plan in place beforehand. The workshop was not a one-time event but rather the first step towards continued collaboration and research to ensure Bitcoin's post-quantum security.
