Bitcoin Developers Push for Access to Powerful AI Models Amid Surge in Hacking Activity

The Bitcoin Policy Institute and over 40 digital-asset organizations have signed an open letter to AI labs, urging them to grant trusted access to frontier models for Bitcoin developers. The request comes as hackers continue to target crypto infrastructure with AI-assisted attacks.

A recent surge in hacking activity has seen malicious actors stealing more than $634 million from cryptocurrency platforms in April 2026, the highest monthly total since the Bybit hack in February 2025. This is a stark reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in the industry.

The letter does not ask AI labs to open advanced cybersecurity capabilities to the public. Instead, it proposes a controlled program: early access to frontier cybersecurity models, sufficient computing capacity, secure research environments, and direct lines of communication with AI lab security teams.
