Bitcoin Developers Question Future of Little-Used Security Feature
The Bitcoin network is known for its robust digital infrastructure, but developers periodically review technologies that serve as its defenses. One such defense, CJDNS, has come into question due to its limited use.
CJDNS is an alternative, encrypted networking technology that allows Bitcoin nodes to communicate with each other over a separate path, similar to having multiple roads leading to the same destination. According to the Bitcoin Core documentation, it serves as an additional network to IPv4, IPv6, Tor, and I2P.
However, in reality, very few nodes use this technology. A recent study by Andrew Chow, a Bitcoin Core developer, found only 22 available CJDNS nodes, with only seven meeting the stringent reliability and operational requirements. Martin Zumsande, another developer, reported that his node often connected to only three or four partners on this network.
This is problematic because it could facilitate 'eclipse attacks', where a malicious actor isolates an unsuspecting node from the rest of the Bitcoin network, allowing them to communicate only through manipulated connections. With such a narrow range of potential partners, such attacks may become easier to execute.
