Bitcoin Dips Below $63,000 as Coinbase Earnings Disappoint
Crypto market sentiment took a hit on July 31 as Bitcoin dipped below $63,000 for the first time in about 10 days. The decline was triggered by a one-two punch: disappointing earnings from Coinbase and stalled progress on the Clarity Act.
Coinbase reported second-quarter revenue of $1.22 billion, down 19% year over year and short of analyst estimates of roughly $1.3 billion. The company also posted a net loss of $359.5 million. As a result, Coinbase shares dropped between 7% and 14% in after-hours trading.
The Clarity Act, which aims to clarify jurisdictional lines between the SEC and CFTC over digital assets, faced renewed opposition in the Senate during the final days of July. With lawmakers leaving Washington ahead of the August recess, the bill's progress stalled.
Strategy Inc., a corporate Bitcoin whale formerly known as MicroStrategy, added its own underwhelming earnings to the mix. The company's disappointing results contributed to the negative sentiment surrounding major corporate Bitcoin holders.
