Bitcoin Dominance at Risk from Quantum Computing Threat
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has warned that Bitcoin's dominance as the largest cryptocurrency could be threatened by its inability to respond effectively to the quantum computing threat. According to Hoskinson, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could potentially derive private keys from exposed public keys and authorize transactions without the owner's approval, compromising the security of the network.
Hoskinson pointed out that Bitcoin's governance system is slow and inflexible, requiring broad off-chain consensus for major changes. This makes it difficult to coordinate a timely response to the quantum threat, which could lead to Bitcoin losing its position as the leading cryptocurrency.
Cardano, on the other hand, has implemented formal onchain governance through its Plomin hard fork in January 2025, allowing ADA holders to vote directly or delegate voting power to representatives. This system enables the community to approve upgrades and treasury withdrawals onchain, providing a clearer route for approving changes.
