Bitcoin Dominance Holds Near 59% Amid Shift to Protective Options Positioning
Bitcoin retained its structural leadership in digital asset markets at the start of 2026, maintaining dominance near 59%, despite mid- and small-cap assets failing to sustain earlier rallies.
A report from Coinbase and Glassnode found that Bitcoin's (BTC) leadership was accompanied by a shift towards protective structures in options positioning, as investors hedged against further downside rather than exiting risk entirely.
The firms' quarterly Charting Crypto report, released on January 27, drew on proprietary on-chain data and an institutional survey to assess market conditions for Q1. The report noted that Bitcoin supply active within three months increased to 37% in Q4, while long-dormant supply declined modestly.
The shift towards protective structures in options positioning is a notable development, as options open interest now exceeds perpetual futures following October's deleveraging event.
