Bitcoin Dubbed 'Liquidity Smoke Alarm', Expects Surge With Next Fed Money Printing

Veteran investor Lawrence Lepard has described Bitcoin as a 'liquidity smoke alarm' due to its sensitivity to short-term liquidity conditions. In an interview, he explained that despite growing M2 money-supply growth, Bitcoin's price has stayed weak because system-wide liquidity is currently tight.

Lepard compared Bitcoin to gold, which he sees as 'pure debasement insurance.' He noted that gold buyers tend to take a long-term view, unlike Bitcoin investors who are often driven by short-term volatility. Lepard expects the Federal Reserve to be forced into another round of money printing within 16-18 months, which could change liquidity conditions and potentially boost Bitcoin's price.

The relationship between M2 growth and Bitcoin's price has been a topic of discussion in recent months. Lepard pointed out that gold responded strongly to the Fed's emergency stimulus during the COVID-19 crash, soaring from $1,200 to $2,000 in two months. In contrast, Bitcoin was relatively flat before eventually surging from $10,000 to $60,000.

Lepard's views on Bitcoin's price behavior echo those of FLOP Labs CEO Arthur Hayes, who has also described Bitcoin as a 'liquidity smoke alarm.' However, not all analysts agree with this perspective, and some argue that M2 growth is not a reliable indicator of financial assets.
