Bitcoin Early Adopters Stir as $500M Worth of Dormant Coins Move
Bitcoin's early adopters are moving old coins in large numbers due to growing concerns over security and custody. In August, around 6,427 BTC worth $500 million moved from dormant wallets. This is a significant increase from July's total of 30 spends, which saw 1,264.16 BTC move.
The largest share of activity came from wallets created in 2014, with 94 transfers moving approximately 3,286.26 BTC between August 1 and August 30.
Interestingly, the 2014 cohort broke down into two distinct clusters. The first cluster saw coins trickle out over 11 days between August 3 and August 13, while the second cluster moved nearly uniform lots of roughly 50 BTC on a single day, August 19.
The latter's coordinated batch suggests that larger holders may be proactively consolidating legacy holdings, increasingly treating aging keys as operational liabilities rather than digital trophies.
