A recent coordinated security audit has flagged 85 critical bugs across 390 Bitcoin projects, sparking concerns about the cryptocurrency's ecosystem. The audit, led by a volunteer team of 16 developers, uncovered 4,962 findings in just over a day, including 635 high-severity issues.

The team used AI models to scan Bitcoin wallets, cryptographic libraries, and infrastructure, with Calle, the pseudonymous developer behind the Cashu ecash protocol, describing the situation as 'extremely bad.'

Most of the critical reports have been quickly verified by project owners, who are now working to reproduce the findings in a local test environment. However, the sheer volume of reports is creating problems of its own, with chaos reigning supreme in the ecosystem.

The audit highlights the importance of automated security testing, which has become more accessible and cost-effective in recent times. Rob Hamilton, who built the automated setup used by the team, noted that the hardest part of the process is coordinating to get the findings to the right maintainers.
