Bitcoin Ends July with Modest Gain Despite Ongoing Market Pressures
Bitcoin (BTC) ended July with a modest gain of 7.5% despite several headwinds, including concerns over Federal Reserve rate increases and a security breach tied to Coldcard.
A significant factor in Bitcoin's relative stability was the widespread liquidation of leveraged positions that occurred during the sharp selloff in late June. As Bitfinex noted, average daily liquidations have since remained well below $400 million to $500 million, indicating that the fuel for further forced liquidations had been exhausted.
The theft of at least $38 million worth of Bitcoin from Coldcard's security breach remains a variable for market participants to absorb. Paul Howard, a director at Wincent, emphasized that the stolen assets have not yet been sold, but their potential future liquidation could weigh on Bitcoin prices in the short term.
As August begins, analysts are closely watching the market's response to next week's US employment data and the rebound in institutional demand. Lacy Zhang of Bitget Wallet cautioned that a stronger dollar, rising real yields, and weakening exchange-traded fund demand could combine to put downward pressure on Bitcoin prices, leading to a rangebound market.
