Bitcoin Enters New Era with ZK-Proof Breakthrough
Bitcoin has entered a new era after successfully verifying its first zero-knowledge (ZK) proof on mainnet. This breakthrough, which occurred at 11:22 pm UTC on July 24, could unlock new levels of functionality and scalability for the cryptocurrency.
The achievement is thanks to BitcoinOS (BOS), which used a ZK Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge verification software library called BitSNARK. This technology allows developers to create 'near-trustless bridges' between the mainnet and layer-2 rollups, enabling private transactions and smart contracts.
According to Edan Yago, co-founder of BOS, this development marks a significant shift in Bitcoin's capabilities. 'This represents an era where Bitcoin is no longer just digital gold,' he said. 'It's also an operating system and a platform for decentralized applications.'
This upgrade means that Bitcoin can now handle decentralized services and activities, such as DAOs and DeFi, without the need for soft forks or consensus changes.
