Bitcoin Enters Prime Collateral Territory, Ledn Predicts $1 Trillion Industry
Bitcoin (BTC) is increasingly being treated like prime collateral by Wall Street, according to crypto lender Ledn. The company predicts that Bitcoin-backed consumer loans could grow into a $1 trillion industry over the next decade as institutional finance becomes more comfortable with treating BTC as collateral.
The forecast follows an investment-grade Bitcoin-collateralized asset-backed security deal earlier this year, valued at $200 million and rated BBB- by S&P Global. The bonds are now trading approximately 5% tighter in secondary markets than at issuance, signaling growing institutional comfort with Bitcoin-backed credit structures.
Mauricio Di Bartolomeo, Ledn's co-founder and CSO, said that 'Bitcoin is held by tens of millions of people, nearly 200 public companies, and more than a dozen governments.' He added that S&P rating the bonds investment grade was an important milestone in Bitcoin's transition from a speculative asset to prime financial collateral.
Ledn argues that trust is currently holding back the adoption of Bitcoin lending. A survey commissioned by the company found that 88% of crypto holders would consider borrowing against their digital assets, but only 14% currently do. The primary obstacle is no longer access or technical infrastructure, but rather trust deficits caused by past collapses in the sector.
