Bitcoin ETF Inflows End Streak Amid Regulatory Uncertainty
The streak of institutional buying in Bitcoin has ended after nine consecutive trading days of substantial inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). On August 28, these ETFs saw a net outflow of $201.8 million, marking the first daily withdrawal since the start of the streak.
Despite this reversal, the inflow totals over the past nine days highlight robust demand among institutional investors. During this period, approximately $3 billion entered these products between August 17 and August 28, with the week ending August 28 closing with net inflows near $924.5 million.
The previous week had seen even stronger inflows, as Bitcoin funds absorbed about $1.92 billion, recording their largest weekly total so far this year. These data points underscore the position of Bitcoin ETFs as central vehicles for institutional access to regulated cryptocurrency investment.
BlackRock's IBIT Bitcoin ETF frequently accounted for a significant share of daily inflows, capturing about 62% of a $338 million daily inflow when Bitcoin prices traded over $80,000. The price movement highlights that while ETF demand is a significant market driver, it does not directly guarantee upward price momentum.
The regulatory environment remains in flux, with the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act (CLARITY Act) awaiting a procedural Senate vote on September 15. Passage of this legislation would determine whether it advances further in the legislative process, amid ongoing disagreements within the Senate over provisions related to ethics rules and banking sector protections.
