Bitcoin ETF Shutdown Highlights Shift to AI Investments
The first Bitcoin spot ETF, Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI), is set to shut down. Launched in 2022, it was registered under the Securities Act of 1933 and allowed investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without directly holding it.
According to CoinDesk, the closure may be the first liquidation of a U.S. spot bitcoin offering in history. The fund has $14.7 million in assets under management, which is typically not enough to sustain an ETF's long-term survival.
The reason behind the dwindling flows into Bitcoin ETFs is due to investors chasing better returns offered by AI-related investments. As one industry analyst observed, 'much of the market views the opportunity cost of holding BTC as too high while anything AI-related soars.'
