Bitcoin ETFs Solve One of Asset's Biggest Adoption Problems
Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas says spot Bitcoin (BTC) ETFs have solved one of the asset's biggest adoption problems, embedding it in traditional investment portfolios.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has become the category's standout product, with total assets nearing $100 billion in August. According to Balchunas, only a small portion of IBIT flows, potentially around 2% to 3%, comes from investors converting BTC held directly into ETF shares.
The analyst estimates that 3% of a traditional portfolio should be allocated to Bitcoin as a 'sweet spot', large enough to matter if BTC appreciates sharply but small enough to limit damage from another severe drawdown. Balchunas highlights that IBIT has outperformed Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF since its launch, despite Bitcoin prices suffering a roughly 50% drawdown.
