Bitcoin ETFs Surge Past $1B in Weekly Inflows Amid Self-Custody Security Concerns

The Bitcoin ETF market experienced its strongest week of inflows since April, with approximately $1 billion flowing into the funds. This significant influx of capital started after a hardware wallet hack raised questions about the safety of self-custody options.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) was responsible for most of this increase, pulling in $757.5 million over a seven-day period. The week began with net outflows of $212.7 million on July 31, but then the flows reversed, with daily inflows reaching $170.1 million, $207.8 million, and $241.6 million respectively.

The Coldcard exploit, which compromised around 5,200 wallets and drained between $114 million and $130 million in Bitcoin, may have contributed to investors seeking safer alternatives like regulated ETFs with institutional-grade custody. While analysts caution against directly linking the hack to the inflows, it's possible that the compromised security of self-custody options made these alternative options more appealing.

BlackRock's dominance in this market is also worth noting, as IBIT continues to capture a significant share of inflows. With such large sums pouring into the fund, including a single-day haul of $128.3 million, it's clear that regulated ETFs are becoming increasingly attractive to investors seeking exposure to Bitcoin.
