Bitcoin Faces First Real Test as Overbought Signals Mount
Bitcoin has been hovering around $78,800, just below the psychologically significant $80,000 threshold. The cryptocurrency has surged by 14 percent over the past week and is 24 percent higher on a monthly basis. However, it remains approximately 38 percent below its 52-week peak of $126,198.07.
The rally's catalyst was a policy announcement from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to double buyback operations for long-dated government bonds. This triggered a decline in yields and ignited a broad rally across risk assets, pushing prices higher.
The combination of aggressive Treasury market intervention, record institutional inflows through exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and the unwinding of leveraged bearish bets has propelled prices from below $65,000 to near $80,000. The Treasury announcement coincided with a marked acceleration in spot Bitcoin ETF inflows, with funds recording daily inflows of $517 million and $606 million on August 19 and 20 respectively.
However, the technical picture is growing increasingly stretched, with the 14-day Relative Strength Index sitting at 80.3, firmly in overbought territory. DailyCoin identifies the $80,000 resistance zone as a critical ceiling, while Glassnode maps a broader resistance region spanning $81,000 to $86,000.
