Bitcoin Faces Historical Headwinds as September Market Landscape Shifts
Bitcoin's August performance was its best since 2017, closing the month up around 25% and marking the first positive August record since 2021.
The price has retreated to around $77,000 as it enters a brief consolidation phase, according to data from Bitwise.
Historically, September is one of Bitcoin's worst months, with average returns ranging between -3% and -4%, but analysts argue that the current market structure is vastly different from the past due to changes in macro liquidity and institutional participation.
The August surge was driven by the 'dollar credit trade,' based on a US Treasury Department announcement that raised the single-operation limit for long-term Treasury bond liquidity repurchases, which improved liquidity and reduced long-term bond yields.
However, with the Federal Reserve Chair expressing greater concern over inflation than employment at the Jackson Hole conference, market expectations for a rate hike in September have intensified, potentially reversing the August liquidity-trade logic.
