Bitcoin Faces Long-Term Quantum Threat, Not Immediate One: Coinbase CEO
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has downplayed the threat of quantum computing to Bitcoin, saying it does not pose an immediate risk. However, he emphasized that the industry must prepare for a future where powerful quantum computers become a reality.
The launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, backed by Coinbase and other major players like BlackRock and Fidelity Digital Assets, aims to support the long-term security of the Bitcoin network. The consortium will coordinate efforts to prepare the cryptocurrency for the eventual arrival of quantum computers.
Coinbase has published a detailed roadmap outlining its post-quantum strategy, which includes developing a quantum-resistant version of its proprietary key management system, PQ-CoreKMS. Researchers continue to make advances in hardware reliability and error correction, but agree that a cryptographically relevant quantum computer capable of attacking Bitcoin would require millions of high-quality physical qubits.
