Bitcoin Faces Quantum Computing Threat: Can Decentralized Community Agree on Mitigation
Bitcoin is facing a potential security threat from quantum computing, which could compromise the ECDSA protection used to verify ownership of coins.
While no powerful quantum computer exists yet, some experts believe they could emerge within the next decade. The technology needed to create quantum-resistant cryptography already exists, but convincing Bitcoin's decentralized developer and user community to agree on how and when to implement it may be a major challenge.
The issue gained attention after Galaxy Digital pledged up to $5 million on July 21 to help strengthen Bitcoin's resistance to future quantum attacks. The company believes the threat is real enough to invest in mitigating it.
