Bitcoin Fails to Hold $80,000 Amid ETF Inflows and Mixed Market Signals
Bitcoin's price has continued to hover below $80,000 after several failed attempts to break through this level. As of September 8, the cryptocurrency traded around $78,380, down 1.3% over the past 24 hours according to CoinGecko.
The mixed signals in the market are reflected in the performance of U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs, which have seen a third consecutive positive week with net inflows of about $987 million from August 31 to September 4, according to SoSoValue. However, analysts point out that this trend may not be indicative of long-term investment, but rather position adjustments ahead of macroeconomic data.
CoinShares analysts have observed a shift in bitcoin's relationship with traditional markets, noting that the cryptocurrency has been reacting more strongly to concerns over U.S. public finances and is now trading like digital gold again. However, James Butterfill, head of research at CoinShares, believes that a sustained break above $80,000 will require either de-escalation of the conflict around Iran or a significant loss of confidence in U.S. government debt.
