Bitcoin Fails to Hold Above $79,852 as Market Awaits Confirmation
Bitcoin's price surged to $79,852 after the US inflation report but failed to hold above this level. The cryptocurrency traded at $77,917 on Coinbase, up 1% from its 24-hour open and 2.4% below its session high. This leaves investors wondering whether this was a breakout attempt or just another volatile move within Bitcoin's recent range.
The evidence so far suggests that it may have been an attempt to break through the $80,000 level. The September CME Bitcoin futures contract also reached $79,965 before slipping back near $78,060, indicating that buyers could force a test but had not yet demonstrated acceptance above this level.
The CPI reaction was not a simple easy-money trade, as the consumer-price index rose 0.4% in August and 3.4% from a year earlier. Excluding food and energy, prices increased 0.3% on the month and 2.4% year over year. The US Dollar Index was essentially flat near 99.08 at the same point in the session.
Crypto stocks amplified the move, with Coinbase shares adding 3.6%, Strategy rising 4.5%, and miner MARA Holdings jumping 6.9%. However, bulls now need confirmation rather than another intraday approach: sustained spot and futures trading above $80,000, stronger volume, and a backdrop in which yields or the dollar stop resisting the move.
