Bitcoin Falls Below $63,700 Despite In-Line US Inflation Report
Bitcoin's price slipped to below $63,700 on Thursday after the release of the US inflation report. The report showed that headline inflation increased by 0.1% month over month and 3.4% annually, while core inflation rose 0.2% on the month but eased to an annual rate of 2.5%. These figures reduced the perceived likelihood of another Federal Reserve interest-rate increase in September, with futures markets lowering the probability of a rate hike to approximately 38%, down from 46% before the report's release.
Initially, markets reacted positively to the report, with gold rising 1.3%, Ethereum gaining just over 1%, and Bitcoin climbing approximately 0.5%. However, these gains proved short-lived as the cryptocurrency fell back below $63,700.
Maksym Sakharov, co-founder and CEO of WeFi, stated that while the softer print is welcome since it gives the Fed more breathing room for deciding on a rate hike, one release will not settle the argument over the inflation path due to pre-built volatility. He noted that 'the bigger story was the positioning already built before the release,' which led to sharp reversals and forced exits in the financial markets, especially crypto.
Until the Fed provides a clearer policy path, investors will continue to focus on upcoming events such as the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole gathering later in August. The event could provide more clarity on policymakers' economic outlook and the future direction of interest rates. Investors will also be watching the US employment report scheduled for September 4 and the next inflation release on September 11.
