Bitcoin Flirts with $65K Amid Security Concerns and Hard Fork Fears
Bitcoin's price continued its upward momentum on Saturday, reaching $64,986 and flirting with the $65,000 threshold. The cryptocurrency gained 0.61% in value over the past day.
The BTCPay Server security flaw allowed hackers to compromise Lightning nodes and extract cryptocurrency. Malicious actors exploited a critical weakness within the server infrastructure, gaining unauthorized access to sensitive authentication credentials. This enabled them to control Lightning-based wallets, terminate payment channels, and transfer cryptocurrency holdings.
Foundation, a prominent hardware wallet manufacturer, confirmed that its BTCPay-connected Lightning node suffered complete drainage due to the exploit. However, its primary on-chain hot wallet remained secure.
A separate concern emerged with the BIP-110 hard fork proposal, which seeks to impose restrictions on non-transactional data embedded within Bitcoin's blockchain. The proposal has raised concerns about potential chain fragmentation and transaction replay vulnerabilities.
