Bitcoin Fork Failure Highlights Challenges of Replicating Original Launch
A recent attempt to create a new Bitcoin fork, BIP-110, has highlighted the challenges of replicating the conditions that led to the original launch of Bitcoin. The fork, which aimed to curb spam and illegal on-chain activity, struggled to gain traction and ultimately stalled after only two blocks were produced.
Giacomo Zucco, a member of the Plan B Network, noted that the failure of BIP-110 demonstrates how difficult it would be to recreate Bitcoin's original launch conditions today. He argued that the modern cryptocurrency landscape is characterized by increased attention from markets, governments, and speculators, making it nearly impossible to replicate the 'immaculate conception' of Bitcoin.
Zucco also criticized the removal of Luke Dashjr as a BIP editor, stating that this decision could deepen centralization claims within the Bitcoin community. He noted that the conflict surrounding BIP-110 combined legitimate disputes over spam and governance with a 'moral panic' over potential legal risks for node operators.
