Bitcoin Fork Looms as Miners Prepare to Signal Support for BIP110

The Bitcoin community is bracing for a potential fork as BIP110, a soft fork aimed at reducing data on the blockchain, approaches its activation date. The proposal has sparked heated debate among developers and miners, with some supporting it as a solution to scalability issues and others opposing it due to concerns over limitations on user freedom.

Currently, only 1-2% of miners have signaled support for BIP110, which would limit the size of OP_RETURNs and temporarily restrict other types of data. However, if a larger portion of miners signal their support, such as 50%, it could lead to a chain split, creating a new cryptocurrency with its own set of rules.

According to the authors, there are three possible scenarios for how this could play out: no miners signaling, all miners signaling, and a sizable minority of miners signaling. In the first scenario, BIP110 nodes would stall and become unusable, while in the second, all Bitcoin nodes would remain compatible, but with potentially harmful limitations on user freedom.

However, even if all miners signal support for BIP110, it does not guarantee that the new rules will be enforced. Miners could continue to use non-BIP110 software, and economic nodes may also ignore the new rules. In this case, a chain split would occur, creating two separate cryptocurrencies.

One of the most significant risks associated with BIP110 is the potential for one-sided wipe out, where the original blockchain becomes obsolete and is discarded in favor of the new one. This has led proponents to predict that all miners will signal preemptively to prevent a split.
