Bitcoin Fuels $32M Peptide Market as Buyers Bypass Banks
The peptide market has seen a significant surge in demand for weight loss and recovery products, with some suppliers opting to accept Bitcoin as payment. According to Chainalysis, gray-market peptide vendors received $32 million in cryptocurrency during the first quarter of 2026, a 700% increase from the same period last year.
The market has attracted first-time crypto buyers who may not have previously used digital assets. Zach, a marketing director, bought 20 vials of retatrutide, an experimental weight-loss peptide developed by Eli Lilly & Co., for $240 using Bitcoin through Coinbase Global Inc.
Experts warn that many products in the market lack reliable human safety and effectiveness data, with Sara Graham from Chainalysis stating that the sector is 'attracting first-time crypto buyers with no darknet market history.' The American Academy of Peptide Medicine chair, Lee Rosebush, called the market the 'wild, wild west' and advocated for clearer rules to improve access to tested medicines.
U.S. regulators are reviewing whether some peptides could be legally produced domestically, which may change demand for products from overseas laboratories.
