Bitcoin Fuels Booming Peptide Market
The peptide market has seen significant growth in recent times, with gray-market vendors receiving $32 million in cryptocurrency during the first quarter of this year. This represents a 700% increase from the same period last year and puts the sector on pace to exceed $100 million annually.
Many online peptide sellers are now accepting Bitcoin (BTC) as payment, drawing in first-time crypto users who may not have previously considered using digital assets. Zach, a 49-year-old marketing director, bought 20 vials of purported retatrutide from a Chinese seller for $240, which is being developed by Eli Lilly & Co.
Experts warn that many products lack reliable human safety and effectiveness data, with Sara Graham, senior intelligence analyst at Chainalysis, noting that the market is attracting first-time crypto buyers with no darknet market history. Lee Rosebush, chair of the American Academy of Peptide Medicine, called the market the 'wild, wild west' and said clearer rules could reduce research-only suppliers while improving access to tested medicines.
U.S. regulators are reviewing whether some peptides could be legally produced domestically, but until rules and payment access change, demand will continue to push parts of the trade toward crypto, repeating Bitcoin's earlier role in markets avoided by conventional finance.
