Bitcoin Fuels Gray-Market Peptide Trade with $32M in Crypto Payments
Bitcoin's role in unregulated markets has been highlighted by its increasing use as a payment tool for online peptide sellers. These vendors, who operate outside the prescription drug system, are receiving millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from buyers looking for experimental compounds marketed for weight loss and recovery.
According to Chainalysis, gray-market peptide vendors received $32 million in cryptocurrency during the first quarter of 2026, a 700% increase from the same period last year. The sector is on pace to exceed $100 million annually, with recent activity drawing first-time crypto buyers into the market.
The peptides being sold online often lack reliable human safety and effectiveness data, and experts warn that many products are untested and potentially hazardous. Lee Rosebush, chair of the American Academy of Peptide Medicine, called the market the 'wild, wild west' and advocated for clearer rules to reduce research-only suppliers while improving access to tested medicines.
Some vendors use Bitcoin because banks and card networks often reject merchants selling unapproved compounds due to legal and regulatory risks. Zach, a 49-year-old marketing director, bought 20 vials of purported retatrutide from a Chinese seller for $240 in Bitcoin after opening an account with Coinbase Global Inc.
