Bitcoin Fuels Unregulated Peptide Market as Buyers Bypass Banks
Bitcoin has become an unlikely tool for buying unregulated peptide compounds marketed online for weight loss and recovery, with gray-market vendors receiving $32 million in cryptocurrency during the first quarter of 2026. This represents a 700% increase from the same period last year.
The peptide trade has expanded rapidly, with demand for products that are not approved by regulators or licensed pharmacies. Many sellers ship compounds from overseas laboratories, labeling them as research chemicals to avoid detection. As a result, banks and card networks often reject these merchants due to legal and regulatory risks.
Some suppliers have started accepting only cryptocurrency, making Bitcoin a payment tool for customers who previously avoided digital assets. Zach, a 49-year-old marketing director, bought 20 vials of purported retatrutide from a Chinese seller for $240 using Coinbase. He said the price difference outweighed his concerns about the speculative asset.
Chainalysis reported that gray-market peptide vendors received $32 million in cryptocurrency during the first quarter, and recent activity puts the sector on pace to exceed $100 million annually.
