Bitcoin Futures Open Interest Surges to $48 Billion, Sparking Liquidation Fears

Bitcoin futures open interest has surged to $48 billion, leaving traders on high alert for potential liquidation-driven price swings. According to Glassnode, this substantial exposure on the long side could lead to a sharp decline in the market if forced liquidations occur and there are insufficient buy orders to absorb the selling.

The imbalance between spot and futures trading is adding to the risk, with Bitcoin spot trading volume at $12.55 billion over the past 24 hours, roughly half the level of futures trading. This leaves the spot market less able to absorb large liquidations in derivatives.

Furthermore, Glassnode reports that buy orders below the market have fallen by about one-third since peaking in early July. If Bitcoin retests its June low of $58,000, this thinner pool of resting demand could lead to a steeper drop.
