Bitcoin Giants Unite to Combat Quantum Threat
Nine major firms have joined forces to address Bitcoin's long-term security concerns. The Bitcoin Security Consortium has been formed, with founding members including BlackRock, Coinbase, and Strategy.
The consortium will fund post-quantum cryptography research, which aims to develop methods resistant to both classical and quantum computer attacks. Bitcoin currently relies on elliptic curve cryptography to prove ownership and authorize transactions.
Large-scale quantum computers cannot break Bitcoin's current cryptography, but a powerful enough machine could potentially derive a private key from an exposed public key, allowing an attacker to move funds from vulnerable addresses.
