Bitcoin-Gold Correlation Hits Record High, Fueling Rally Speculation
The correlation between Bitcoin and gold has reached a record high, sparking speculation about a potential rally in Bitcoin's price. The 90-day Pearson correlation coefficient between the two assets stood at its highest level ever, while the 30-day correlation coefficient rose to 0.8, its highest this year.
The recent surge in both assets is attributed to the 'debasement trade', where investors concerned about falling purchasing power in fiat currencies are shifting funds into scarce assets like gold and Bitcoin. Inflows continue into exchange-traded funds, with gold and Bitcoin ETFs ranking among the top 10 by inflows.
Historically, sharp gains in the correlation coefficient have been followed by significant price increases for Bitcoin. A similar pattern emerged in the fourth quarter of 2020 and 2022, where Bitcoin rallied after its correlation with gold rose sharply.
