Bitcoin, Gold Tighten Grip: Analysts See Shift as Economic Uncertainty Grows

The financial markets have been through strong months after a near-miss in February. After a near-global crisis, assets began to recover steadily: first the tech stocks, then gold, and now it seems bitcoin's turn is coming. As more capital flows into high-risk assets, analysts say this trend isn't coincidental.

A recent study by Grayscale found that bitcoin's 90-day correlation with gold rose above 50%, while its correlation with the Nasdaq 100 tech index fell from 60% to 33%. Zach Pandl, head of research at Grayscale, said this shift reflects investors' renewed focus on financial independence and value preservation. As the macroeconomic landscape changes, bitcoin offers a limited, liquid alternative to gold.

Pandl notes that as fiscal imbalances grow and investors reevaluate fiat currencies' long-term purchasing power, bitcoin can serve as a safe-haven asset alongside gold. With the US national debt surpassing $40 trillion and long-term bond yields remaining above 5%, traditional assets have become less attractive. The current environment is reminiscent of 2020's early days when bitcoin and gold were not strongly correlated.

Historically, this setup has been favorable for gold. If investors continue to fear dollar devaluation, demand for gold may persist. For bitcoin, the question remains whether its recent correlation with gold signals a lasting shift or merely a short-term macroeconomic episode.
