Bitcoin Halving Countdown Hits 57%, Reward Cut Imminent in 2028
Bitcoin has reached a significant milestone in its march towards the next block reward halving. Approximately 57% of the required 210,000 blocks have been mined, leaving around 90,170 blocks until the event occurs.
The next halving is programmed to take place at block 1,050,000, which puts the estimated date between April 13 and April 17, 2028. At this point, the mining reward will decrease from 3.125 BTC per block to 1.5625 BTC.
This event marks another step in the gradual reduction of Bitcoin's supply, with over 94% of all coins already mined. By the time the 2028 halving takes place, miners will be competing for significantly less reward, which could lead to a consolidation of mining operations and potentially impact transaction fees.
Historically, block halvings have been followed by significant price increases, although the magnitude of this effect has been diminishing with each cycle. The 2012 and 2016 halvings saw price gains of around 100x and 30x respectively, while the 2026 correction was in line with previous mid-cycle declines.
