Bitcoin Hangs in Balance as Powell's Hawkish Tone Dominates Market
Bitcoin faced a challenging situation after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell delivered a hawkish speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, causing prices to drop.
The key passage from Powell's speech was his statement that 'I would be hard pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive', which was interpreted by the market as him leaning against recent easing in financial conditions and retightening them instead.
As a result, the 'debasement' trade, which had previously driven up prices for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, reversed its trend with gold and the US dollar returning to their pre-US Treasury announcement levels.
Bitcoin itself showed resilience, extending its consolidation near recent highs but still trading within a range of 77K-80K. The technicals may provide more insight going forward, as a break above Powell's speech level around 79,887 could signal an extension of the uptrend, while a break below this level could lead to a bigger selloff.
Looking ahead, the market will be closely watching the upcoming US inflation data and interest rate expectations. A soft CPI report could reduce the probability of a Fed hike at the next meeting, while a hot CPI report or hawkish surprises would weigh on Bitcoin prices.
