Bitcoin Hits $80,000's Doorstep, Native Market Structure Takes Over
Bitcoin reached an intraday high of $79,500 on August 21, pushing it within striking distance of $80,000. This milestone comes after a week-long rally that saw Bitcoin climb around 11%.
The surge was fueled by a rare combination of events, including a surprise Treasury intervention, roughly $1.6 billion in spot ETF inflows, and billions of dollars in forced short liquidations.
However, the ETF trading stops until Monday, and much of the leveraged short positioning that drove the squeeze has already been cleared out. This leaves Bitcoin's native market structure as the primary driver for price action over the weekend.
Raphael Zagury from Twenty One Capital noted that market capitalization is not liquidity, and price is set at the margin. He argued that when new demand shows up alongside a shortage of willing sellers, years of pent-up frustration can be re-priced within days.
