Bitcoin Holds Steady Amid Market Turbulence
The cryptocurrency market appears relatively stable at first glance, but beneath the surface, several significant events are unfolding. The most notable is the Federal Reserve's potential interest rate hike, which has been priced in by traders and markets alike. However, despite the 58% probability of a 25 basis point hike as indicated by CME FedWatch, the market reacted more strongly than expected to the August payrolls numbers. This led to Bitcoin dipping below $80,000, with approximately $757 million in leveraged positions being liquidated.
Another area of concern is the security of Tether's (USDT) reserves. A recent audit by KPMG found that Tether has more than $6.8 billion in reserves, but a report by Hacken revealed that around $91.3 billion of USDT on Tron sits behind a contract with administrative controls that can be seized by anyone holding two out of three signing keys.
Meanwhile, the hacker behind July's Coldcard exploit has moved another $7.7 million in Bitcoin, reportedly around 45% of the total stolen. This is the third wave of activity from the attacker, who initially drained roughly $38 million from about 500 wallets by generating seeds with less entropy than required.
The market is also watching altcoin open interest, which has overtaken Bitcoin for the first time since December 2024, indicating increased leverage in riskier assets. Additionally, every whale cohort has flipped into net distribution for the first time since early June, with a visible sell wall near $83,000.
