Cryptographer Hal Finney passed away on August 28, 2014, after a five-year battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Twelve years later, his legacy remains strong in the Bitcoin community. Finney was the first person to receive a Bitcoin transaction when Satoshi Nakamoto sent him 10 BTC on January 12, 2009.

This event marked the moment digital cash left the whiteboard and became a running network. Finney's involvement with Bitcoin dates back to its early days, having been an active voice in cypherpunk mailing lists in the early 1990s. He later worked as a key contributor at PGP Corporation, responsible for the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption software.

In October 2009, Finney publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with ALS. The disease is progressive, attacking nerve cells that control muscle movement. Despite his condition, Finney continued to interact with Bitcoin's early community until he was declared legally dead in Phoenix, Arizona, at age 58.

The speculation about Finney being Satoshi Nakamoto or closely collaborating with him has fueled years of debate. While Finney always denied being Bitcoin's creator, there is no verified evidence to settle the issue. Today, the 10 BTC he received from Satoshi Nakamoto in January 2009 are worth more than $800,000.
